First things first: don't forget to visit our homepage from 6pm AEDT tonight for our NSW election liveblog, where our reporters will be bringing you the latest colour and numbers as the results roll in.

Speaking of the election, Guy Rundle has been hopping from seat to seat, bringing you his uniquely Melburnian perspective on a pretty lacklustre campaign. And with NSW Veterans’ Minister David Elliott finishing up in politics, Anton Nilsson gave Crikey subscribers a fascinating investigation into a key unfulfilled promise.

Another departure is Fred Nile — who Meredith Burgmann might have inspired to get into politics in the first place, as she revealed in a column this week.

Also this week, Maeve McGregor delved into the text messages revealed in the Bruce Lehrmann defamation case, Wakka Wakka man Uncle Dennis explained why he's taking the government to court, and Dominic Kelly pondered where Australia's conservative movement lost its way.

Elsewhere Cam Wilson reported on the violence outside a Mark Latham event, John Buckley chatted to Malcolm Turnbull about his new gig, and David Hardaker wrote about a firm run by a former treasurer well-placed to take advantage of the AUKUS deal.

All that plus Michael Bradley on what happens if Donald Trump is arrested, and plenty more from the Crikey team.

Thanks for your support and have a wonderful weekend.

How did Australia’s conservative movement lose its way?
DOMINIC KELLY

The Liberal Party is in the doldrums — as it once was in the 1980s. But who will put in the intellectual work required to revive the movement?

As Fred Nile ends his 41 years in Parliament, I must confess my part in his political ascension

What happens next if Trump is arrested?
MICHAEL BRADLEY

It's still not clear whether Donald Trump will be arrested and charged over his alleged payment of hush money to an adult-film star. But even if he is, don't expect it to be the end of his 2024 White House run.

Beyond the wonk: how should the Greens campaign?
GUY RUNDLE

The NSW election shows the Greens can field a team of smart, focused candidates. Now, train them to deliver more digs, less figures.

If the NSW Coalition can hold Labor to a minority government tomorrow, or even win, the premier will be a god among his fellow Liberals.

Is it time for Labor to return to Balmain?

‘Dom and dumber’: a wrap of the weirdest NSW election media coverage
CHARLIE LEWIS

In the absence of stirring rhetoric, big personalities or much in the way of a clash of ideas, the NSW election has at least provided us with plenty of weird media coverage.

First Nations people must work until they're 67 before getting the pension, just like white people. But we have a much lower life expectancy.

Labor’s refugee treatment is inhumane, hypocritical, and a relic of the Liberals
BEHROUZ BOOCHANI

When in opposition, Labor was quick to point out the depravity of the Coalition's refugee policy. But now it's business as usual.
